This series of annual reports from WHO monitors the state of the global tuberculosis epidemic, and charts progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. The 2006 report, the tenth in the series, presents data on case notifications and treatment outcomes for 200 countries. It outlines activities that are essential for the successful implementation of the Stop TB Strategy, and sets out costs, budgets, expenditures and sources of funding. It also summarizes progress on special initiatives, such as the development of public-private partnerships in TB control, the management of drug-resistant TB and collaborations in TB and HIV/AIDS control. Since 1980, more than 80 million TB patients have been reported through WHO''s surveillance system, and over 20 million have been treated in DOTS programmes since 1995. The financial monitoring system, since its inception in 2002, has accounted for nearly US$ 6 billion spent on TB control. Bringing together this growing volume of data, Global Tuberculosis Control has become the definitive source of information about the national and international response to the worldwide TB epidemic.
